5 Techniques to Catch the Big Catfish

4.       Set up a chumming system- Chumming is one of the best tactics you can use for fishing for catfish but it’s one that’s just not used often enough. This works best at night but you can use it any time of day and all species of catfish will respond to it. This is because the sense of smell of the catfish is so strong and they will come to the chum even from long distances away. The worse it smells, the more likely they are to be attracted to it. This will attract big catfish that want to feed on the smelly chum.

5.       Talk to people and read fishing reports- while it may sound simple, this is one of the best tactics you can use. Talk with people at the local bait shop, get the recent fishing reports for the area and learn as much as you can about where the fish have been biting.

This will give you the upper hand when it comes to catching those big cats. You can even bring your maps with you and try to get people at the bait shop to circle or point out areas of the map for you.

Who knows the catfish better than the people who live in the area? This will save you a lot of time and money when it comes to fishing for your big cats.

In addition to the techniques listed above, you might want to try anchored fishing for catfish. This is considered to be one of the best approaches to catching them, especially the big ones. You find what many cat anglers call the “honey hole” or “sweet spot,” you just drop your anchor and fish as much as you can.

Remember that your boat location can also play a role in this. You typically want to turn your boat so it’s perpendicular to the shore and start about 100 yards off the banks and work your way out drifting. You should always cast your poles in the opposite direction from where you are drifting. You should try to work each area for about 15 to 30 minutes at least before moving on. Some fishermen miss out on the big cats because they’re not patient enough in one area.

With these tips for catching the big catfish, you should find you have more productive fishing trips with bigger catches each time. Have fun!
