Three Secret Catfish Baits

Dough Balls – Dough balls are probably one of the easiest homemade baits to make. The first step is to choose your base. Many people use bread, peanut butter or cookie dough but you can use most anything. Place this base in a bucket and add chicken livers, cheese or some other ingredient that will give it a strong smell. Combine the ingredients together and once it reaches a consistency that holds together, roll out the mixture in small balls. Place these in a sealed container to keep them fresh and they’re ready for your next fishing trip.

Chum Bait – If you can stand the smell, chum bait is one of the best to use in the cooler months (you do not want to use this bait in the heat of the summer). Begin by choosing your main ingredient which could be shad, shrimp, mullet or any type of bait fish. Place this in a bucket and chop up into small pieces, then add bay or surf water to bait fish and grind it all up together.

Separate the mixture into small portions and freeze. When you’re ready to go catfishing, pull out a few bags. When you get to the water all you have to do is lower the opened bag into the water near the bottom and shake out the mixture. This will release the smell and the catfish will be drawn to your area.

The bait you use is very important when seeking out catfish. You can use most anything to fish for this species because they will eat most anything that gets in their path. However, if you want to ensure your success and make all of your fishing trips a productive one, there is nothing better than one of the three secret catfish baits listed above.

They have other advantages as well. You can make them yourself and store them so anytime you have a chance to go fishing, your bait is ready. They’re inexpensive, easy to make and easy to use. But most of all, they get results.

What more could you ask for? Just make sure that you keep the bait in a sealed container so it will be fresh when you’re ready to use it. Try your hand at making your own bait and see how well your next catfish fishing trip turns out.

You may be surprised at the results.
