Basic tips for catfish fishing include learning everything you can about the lake or river you are fishing in. The more you know about the waters you are fishing in the better results you will have catching the catfish. Did you know that you could normally catch larger catfish in the wintertime than at any other time of the year? It’s true, and one reason for this is because many of the catfish that survives through the spring and fall without being caught is already a fairly decent size. Therefore, they continue to grow and by wintertime they can reach a really nice size. They are usually very hungry as well and waiting for some food to come along.

Since catfish swim together in schools if you are having trouble locating them, you may want to enlist the help of electronics to help you find them. Once you locate a school of catfish you may be able to catch your limit in no time at all. Using a fish finder will save you a lot of valuable time.

If you use long fishing rods you will be able to reach the spots where you want your bait to go easier and quieter. It simply allows you to be able to place the bait exactly where you want it go by dropping the line straight down into the middle of the catfish which makes it look more natural. This will help to encourage the catfish to hit your line because they perceive it as a natural food source.

Make sure your reel is in good working condition and that you use a heavy-duty reel that is strong enough to help you bring in the larger fish that you will most likely be catching. After all, you wouldn’t want to lose the opportunity to catch a big one due to faulty equipment.
