Big Channel Cats

What is the best bait for big channel cats?( 15 pounds)

The best bait for big Chanel Catfish is without a doubt a large fish, preferably a fish that is native to the water you are fishing. The biggest Channel Catfish I have caught have come from a local river near my house. When I go fishing exclusively for big cats the first thing I do is use either red worms or small minnows to catch my bait. As with most rivers there are a variety of potential bait fish. Large suckers, bluegills, green sunfish and many other fish in the six to ten inch class have all worked well as bait for large fish. I do prefer this particular method for large Channel Catfish. First I will use a medium to heavy action rod with a reel spooled with twenty pound braided line. I use a hook that matches the size of bait I select, generally a 2/0 to 4/0 size. I then take my bait and cut a portion of the tail off. This will cause the fish to swim erratically in the water and use the sonar capacity of the catfish against itself. It will also release small amounts of blood into the water that will act as a chum and attack the keen sense of smell that catfish display. I add enough weight to keep the fish on the bottom and then cast it into a deep hole along the river. I like to fish downstream about half a mile from a dam if possible. The best place to fish a river in this manner is a deep hole that is also close to shore.
