Can I drift fish for catfish from shore?

Category: Catfish Fishing Techniques

Someone told me I should try drift-fishing for Catfish but I don’t have a boat. Can this technique be used from the shore?

Yes. Drift-fishing is simply a technique that will help you locate the fish and can be done with a boat or from the shore. If you’re fishing from the bank or wading, using a drift-fishing rig will actually allow you to “drift” your bait under the bobber downstream with the current. To set-up a drift-fishing rig, you’ll need to use a slip-bobber on the line above your hook. As the rig drifts, you’ll want to keep it next to any structure or cover that could be a good hiding place for the catfish. The trick is to keep your line taut and feed it as it moves downstream. For better control and a stronger hookset, keep the line off the water by holding the tip of your rod high. If you’re drift-fishing from a boat, you’ll need a barrel swivel to attach to a 2 1/2 foot leader with a 3/0 hook on the end of the line. Attach a bottom bouncer above the swivel and a small bobber just above the hook on the leader. Allow your boat to actually drift with the wind or you can use your trolling motor to switch back and forth over the area you’ve targeted. In essence, a drift-fishing rig allows you to “sweep” and area to locate the fish.
