Catfish Equipment

What catfishing equipment do I need as a beginner?

The beginning fisherman for catfish certainly does not need an elaborate amount of equipment. Catfish are generally one of the easier fish to catch. You will of course need a rod and reel. I advise using a medium action rod. With this rod you will be able to fish for a variety of different catfish. The key thing to look for is a strong backbone to set the hook. The two main assets of a rod are the ability to detect strikes and the ability to set a hook. If you prime quarry will be Catfish you do not need an expensive rod that had a great deal of touch. These rods are more for Bass and Walleye anglers. A good Catfish rod is one that give you hook setting power. Your choice of reel is not very complicated either. I prefer the Shimano reels over other brands when looking for value. For thirty to forty five dollars you can buy an all purpose reel that will serve you for years if properly maintained. I advise using braided fishing line in the fifteen to twenty pound weight class when fishing for Catfish. This line will give you maximum strength without stretch which will aid in your hook set. It wills till be light enough to cast for good distance as well. You will also need some weights to keep your bait near the bottom and some high quality hooks. A hook sharpener is another vital piece of equipment to add to your tackle box.
