Chicken Livers

Category: Uncategorized

is chicken liver good bait

Yes chicken livers can be excellent bait for catching Catfish of all varieties. The key attractant chicken livers provide is the smell. Catfish are a species that feed primarily through their sense of smell. A Catfish can detect the presence of blood in concentrations as low and several parts per million. To fish a chicken liver properly you need to use an appropriately sizes treble hook and bury each of the barbs into the chicken liver. The barbs of the hooks should not protrude from the bait and should remain buried at all times. You will also need enough weight to keep your bait near the bottom and simply wait for a strike. As a young boy I fished many of our local rivers using this technique with tremendous success. I will mention however that if you are looking for the bets possible bait you should focus your attention elsewhere. Remember always that the primary forage for a Catfish is simply other small fish. If your goal is to maximize your catch I advise forgoing the exotic stink baits and other unnatural baits like chicken livers, hot dogs and corn. Try instead freshly killed or live fish for bait. Size your bait appropriately for the average size range of the Catfish available in the body of water you are fishing. Fathead minnows are often sufficient for catching small to medium sized Channel Catfish. For larger species like Blue and Flathead Catfish you will need to adjust to larger bait such as bluegills or large shiners.
