Usually a heavy action rod in a seven foot or greater length will work
well enough. Bait casting rods usually work very well, and they are
very strong. Spool your reel with anything from a thirty to a
eighty pound braided line. Use a 6/0 to a 10/0 heavy wired,
circle hook.
Remember, your line is going to take a beating, so tie your knots
extremely well, and check both your knots and the condition of your
line often. A Palomar knot will work very well in most cases,
because it creates a strong union that holds well and normally does not
weaken your line.
Just remember that, while dam fishing can yield huge catches of monster
sized catfish, the current that makes it so productive to fish also
makes it dangerous for anglers. Even if you are fishing the
banks, it is a smart move to wear a life vest. Use caution
when boating, and watch your drift. It is always better to be
safe than sorry.
