Always be careful when you are fishing for catfish even when you are using traps. The spines that are located on the dorsal and pectoral fins can be very painful. You have to be just as careful taking them out of the trap as you do when you are taking them off a hook to avoid being stuck.  
 
Rules and Regulations
 
You need to know all the rules and regulations regarding fishing in your state so you can obey the rules at all times. The use of catfish traps may be illegal in some states so it is very important that you take the time to get familiar with the rules and regulations in the state where you are fishing before you begin. Many states allow catfish traps but the use is restricted or regulated. Using catfish traps have been know to allow fishermen to catch as many one hundred fish a day, which is why they are becoming so popular.
 
There is a lot of scrutiny surrounding the use of catfish traps because in many cases the fish are left in the small traps for a full day or longer. One of the problems with this is the fact that some fish such as the channel catfish need to be in an area where they can have the full range of motion so they can perform Caerobic respiration or in a sense breath. Since the traps restrict their movement and basically keeps them suspended in one place they suffocate in these traps.
 
One solution to this problem would be to design larger traps that provide enough space for the catfish to move around. It may be awhile before these problems are solved but in the meantime it is wise to stay up-to-date on all the news relating to catfish traps so you will always be aware of any new laws or regulations being put in place.
