Use salt--rock salt or granulated salt--in your tank to replace the
electrolytes that stress causes the shad to lose. It will also harden
and bond the scales to your shad. Use about a cup of salt to each 30
gallons of water in your tank.
Use a chlorine killer if you use city water or ice made from city
water. This is extremely important. Most city water is highly deadly
because of the chemicals within it. You will find purchased distilled
water a better option if that is possible.
If you have to use ice to keep your water below 65 degrees, you should
add the ice gradually, because any sudden change in temperature can
throw your shad into shock and kill them. That's really all you need to
do to have success with good shad bait tanks.
