Fishing the Pond for Catfish

Stocked Pond Catfishing

Some anglers keep channel catfish stocked in “farm” ponds. This means that you have to feed them and look after them, and then when you’re up for a little catfishing, you can pull them out. Farm ponds are great fun, and the catfish are relatively easy to catch.

If you’re going to keep farm catfish, feed them everyday, and then when you want to pull some out, don’t feed them that day. That way they’ll be good and hungry. Also, for bait use something other than what you feed them with regularly. In other words, if you are throwing them chunks of bread, on fishing days use stinky live bait. That way you can be sure they’ll go for it.

The only tricky thing about farm pond catfishing is that the little buggers will sometimes get used to your bait and after a while, they’ll stop going for it. You have to make sure to change the bait up once in a while, and sometimes it helps to try fishing at other times of day. Many anglers who raise their own catfish have this problem. Another thing that will work is to just not feed them for a day or so. I guarantee they’ll go for whatever you drop down there after that.

Angling for catfish in ponds is lots of fun, and it’s a shame that more anglers don’t do it. Then again, it just means there’s more fish for those of us who do!
