Line Colour and Catfish

Category: Uncategorized

What color of line works best when fishing for Catfish?

Different fish have different ways of seeking and qualifying their food. Fish have the five different physical senses available, just as we do, plus a sixth sensory organ, the lateral line (OK, some fish have seven or more senses), but, because they have very different surroundings, depending on where they habitually live, different fish use different senses, or combinations as their primary sensory organs. For humans, it’s our eyesight, hands down, with hearing in the number two spot. For fish, though, other senses may dominate the input of information about their surroundings. Some are highly dependent on their eyesight, as we are, while many others use their sense of smell as a prime method of ascertaining the nature of their environment. Still others use the senses of touch and taste (not always done with the tongue) to size up a potential meal. Catfish fall into this category, primarily because of their propensity for life in deep, dark and sometimes muddy water, where dependency on eyesight for successful survival would be like depending on a blind man as a crossing guard. Catfish have developed their senses of touch and taste to an extraordinary level, and one at which their eyesight plays only a very small role. As a result, the colour of the line used will have little or no impact on the number or size of catfish caught, though a dark or otherwise non-reflective line will remove all opportunity for some visual aspect of the line to cause a disturbance among the fish.
