Old Hickory Catfish

Where do i look in old hickory damn in tennessee for big catfish? All ive been catching is small ones i want 10 pounds and up any suggestions where to look or go from a boat?

The area around the Steam Plant is usually pretty good for catfish all year. Cut shad is the best bait, but minnows (dead or alive), whole bluegills, and chicken livers have always worked good for me as well. I have spent many a weekend on Old Hickory filling my fish basket up with channel cats. One of the most consistent baits I’ve ever used there is Danny Kings Punch-Bait. This stuff stays on the hooks, isn’t too messy, and seems to draw cats in like a magnet. You can find it at http://www.dannykings.com/. I always keep 4 or 5 jars of this stuff, with the treble hooks on hand. So far, it has worked everywhere I’ve used it. When you order it, be patient. Sometimes they get behind on orders, because I think they still make it in their garage, but it’s more than worth the wait. On the upriver side of the Steam Plant discharge, there are shallow flats. You can anchor along the edge of the dropoff, next to the channel, especially at night, and fish a few rods with baits going from deeper water to shallower. This usually produces some some nice channel cats, and if you are using live minnows, often times, a few stripers and white bass as well. It is also a fairly decent crappie hole, at times. You can also go up into the canal and anchor along the bank. Just cast out and let the current swing your bait down behind the boat. Cut shad is good for this, or live minnows on light tackle. But hang on to your rod. Here, you might hook into anything. I have caught 4′ gar, 30 lb. carp, 40 lb. drum, and one really upset snapping turtle that had a head the size of a quart paint can, using this technique, at this place. Happy Fishing!
