Planning a Great Catfish Fishing Trip

Getting the Scoop on Where the Cats Are Biting

You might consider going with a guide, especially if you are headed to an area where you haven’t been before. There are specialized catfishing guides in every area of the United States and Canada, and they can be really helpful in finding just the right spots where the cats are biting. A good guide knows all the little quirks of that lake or river, and if they are locals (which they should be; I wouldn’t choose a guide that wasn’t), they might know some secrets about the area’s catfish. They also have all kinds of tours available, so you can choose what kind you like.

If you don’t go with a guide, it’s always good to do a little homework on the area you plan to fish. I’d recommend hanging out in the bait and tackle shops or local fishermen’s hangout where you can mix with the locals and get some tips. A little advice from somebody who knows the area can go a long way to getting you some good fish.

There’s a lot to planning a successful fishing trip, but I don’t want to scare you with all this preparation. The fact is, you’ll make some tiny mistakes as you go and learn from them, and each year your fishing trips will go smoother. Just give it some thought, plan as well as you can, head out there, and hope for the best!
