Pond Catfish

i have a pond with big channel and flathead catfish i put in there. But everything i use does not work what bait or live bait would u suggest? And how to fish it.

If I were to fish this pond I would attack it in the following manner: I would first try to ascertain what forage is currently present in the pond. An ultra light rod and reel and a small supply of red worms should gain us this information. I would then simply use one of those fish for bait. There are many concoctions on the market designed to catch Catfish, remember always though that nothing beats live bait. For catching a big Catfish I like a stout heavy action rod with a reel spooled with twenty pound test line. I advise using a 1/0 to 3/0 “J” shaped hook, the size is determined by the size of bait you are using. When you select a fish to use for bait I recommend making an adjustment to it. I like to cut a piece off the tail of my bait fish. This accomplishes two distinct objectives. First it will cause the fish to swim erratically, this is an awesome attractant to any predatory fish. Secondly it will create a small amount of blood in the water which will act as a smell attractant to the fish. By cutting the tail you have activated both smell and sonar attractants to your arsenal of tools. Unlike many other fishermen I like to freeline my bait. I do not use weight to anchor my bait to the bottom, especially in small ponds. The injury caused by the hook will prevent the bait from roaming too far. Try free lining a small fish in this manner and your catch rate will improve.
