The best bait for catfishing

Not only do stink baits work very well when fishing for this species but you can make your own with a few simple ingredients. You can find many recipes online that will show you step by step how to make the bait and store it. Most of them can be made in advance and kept in the freezer until you’re ready to use them.

When to Use Which Baits

Knowing when the best time to use the different types of baits will help you find the best one for each situation. It will depend on things like the season you go fishing, the weather on that particular day, what time you go fishing and the type of water you’re fishing in.

Live baits can be used anytime as long as you take precautions to keep them fresh. You’ll need a cooler or baitwell where you can keep them alive until you’re ready to use them. You can break down live baits a little more by separating it into types of live baits and the following rules will apply. Worms can be fished in all types of water and during any season. Crawdads can be used in clear calm waters, clams work great in freshwater, shrimp are mostly used in the spring and fall and minnows can be fished anywhere, anytime.

Stink baits can only be used in waters that are below sixty degrees or the smell will be too strong to be around. Cut baits also need to be used in cool waters but before using these make sure they’re legal in the area where you’re fishing.

There are many states and areas within certain states that don’t allow cut bait at all and some that have special restrictions on how and when they’re used.

Usually the best time to go catfish fishing is at night because this is when they seem to be most aggressive and easier to find. During the day they will be hiding in holes, logs and other structures where the water temperature is more comfortable. Regardless, of when you go fishing you need to use a method that allows you to get the bait down near or on the bottom of the water where the catfish will be located. Casting, jigging and drift fishing are some of the best methods to use when seeking out the catfish.
