I need some basic catfish fishing tips that my kid can use to help him out.

Far too often nowadays, children never get the oportunity to experience fishing. I encourage everyone to take a kid fishing. It can be a life-changing experience for them. Here are few tips to consider when fishing with children: Children can have a short attention span, so fishing for large Flatheads probably won’t do much for them. Take them to a pay pond, small lake or stream where you know the catfish bite fast and furious. Then let ‘em go at it. Let them help you catch bait, or after you’ve taught them, let them catch the bait. It’s as much fun as the catfish, at times. Teach them about catfish, thier habits, baits, seasonal changes and so on…… Let them have thier own rods, reels, tackle box and equipment. It makes them feel important to have thier own gear. Show them how to use it properly and let them use it often. And keep it simple. Many times, a cane pole works as good as anything. Don’t get aggravated if they want to leave after 30 minutes or so. It’s OK. If you try to force children into doing something they don’t like, they will grow to dislike it even more. Be patient and let them ease into it at thier own speed. Remember, fishing is not everyone’s cup of tea. When you catch a fish, allow the children to handle them, and show them the different parts, identification, etc….Take pictures of them with the fish, so they feel a part of the action. While fishing, talk to your children about anything they want. This should be a time for sharing. And no matter how big the fish they catch is, make it out to be the biggest story in town! The way the world is nowadays, with all the temptations and pressure children experience, fishing is a healthy, wholesome, non-destructive hobby for them. Do everyone a favor….take a kid fishing.
