What information can you tell me about flathead catfish?

The flathead catfish can grow as much as sixty-one inches long and weight about one hundred twenty pounds, but some have weighted in over this. It is said that a catfish lives about twenty years, but this cannot be set in stone unless actual data is presented by the DNR. The catfish at five years can be fifteen inches long. Flathead catfish seem to spawn in late June to early July. The usually nest around areas with deadwood and brush. If you happen upon a nest, you will be in for a fight. The catfish will fight to the end to protect the nest. It is said that a female can lay thousands of eggs at one time, but how many she actually lays will depend on her size. The flathead catfish is a smooth bodied fish with developed dorsal and pectoral; fins. The younger catfish have a white spot on their upper lobe by the caudal fin and are usually all black. The adults have yellowish brown upper sides that are almost purplish brown sometimes. The stomach is yellowish or grayish white. The flatheads are strong fighters. These are the fish that people are known to go noodling for in states that allow such a practice. The fish is caught on heavy fishing rod with a test line of about ten to twenty pounds. The oldest recorded flathead caught weighted in at 123. 9 pounds and remains the world’s record as of March 2009. The taste of a catfish is delicious which is why they are sought after so much.
